Aron Demetz (born 1972, Val Gardena) is an Italian artist who lives and works in Selva di Val Gardena, South Tyrol. He uses traditional woodcarving techniques and a variety of artistic processes to convey his preoccupation with humanity’s relationship with nature. For Aron Demetz, materials constitute an infinite paradigm of creative possibilities, many prompted by matter itself and its chemical, physical and organoleptic prerogatives. The process of realization is just as important for him as, and sometimes more than, the end product. He creates a dialogue between the inseparable phenomena that are the very essence of sculpture – that is, gravity, weight, the search for three-dimensionality and form – and the expanded syntax of sculptural language, enriching it with “phonemes” that lead to a fruitful departure towards new nouns such as movement and time-duration, especially in installation work. The resulting pieces have a strong physical presence, which deeply engages the viewer on a psychological level.
