Sophie Hirsch

Sophie Hirsch (born 1986, Vienna) currently lives and works in Vienna. From her observations of the body and posture, Hirsch explores the dynamic relationship between balance and instability, between strength, vulnerability, and tension. As in the game of Jenga, in which a series of stacked blocks sustain each other and the movement of each one affects the entire structure, the artist perceives the body as a structured organism constantly changing in order to adapt to different contexts. In her sculptures and installations, Hirsch translates the interaction of forces by using precarious and fragile materials - such as silicone, Thera-Bands, papier-mâché, polycarbonate or used shrink wrap, which only becomes durable and stable by being layered or bonded to another element.
