Martina Steckholzer was born in Vipiteno in Italy in 1974 and now lives and works in Vienna. In her pictures she ranges with great freedom across the many diverse possibilities that painting makes available. Her work is thus exceptionally nuanced, characterised by impressive stylistic autonomy. Insofar as she draws inspiration from photographs and video footage of works of art, the relationship between painting and digital technologies plays an important role. Her point of departure and source of inspiration are thus artistic objects and the space that surrounds them. She translates all this into canvases that often allude to the classical topoi of the history of painting, such as portraits and abstract interpretations. Hence her alternation of the world of geometrical shapes with more fluid, spiritual compositions or forms of expression that give way to a more informal approach.
